Fernson joins craft brewers from around the country in Washington DC

Craft brewers gather in DC

This last month, we had the opportunity to visit Washington, DC to lobby for local breweries here in South Dakota and around the country. Blake went to speak with our state senators and representatives about a bill that would change the federal excise tax from $7.00 a barrel to $3.50 a barrel for breweries that produce less than 6 million barrels.

This reduction would allow breweries to add more equipment to be able to make more beer and employ more people. It will also enable breweries like ours to generate more state sales and excise tax through the increased beer production and revenue. Fernson was the only brewery representative from South Dakota.

Building on experience

It was a great opportunity for us to see all of the successful breweries from all over the country in one place and see how far our brewery here in South Dakota has made it. There are so many opportunities in the craft beer market, and it was super exciting to talk to other brewers that have been successful and build on what they’ve learned.

We are dedicated to being a big part of the craft beer scene in South Dakota. Hopefully, our work at the government level will help drive more money to our state through growing local business and create more jobs. Bonus: It keeps the price of beer down too!
